What is the value of comparison in today’s politics?
Comparison is one of the core values of politics. In the words of Todd Landman, it aids in the knowledge of what countries are like (contextual description), organizes them through individual characteristics (classification), builds more general theories in an attempt to explain phenomena (hypothesis-testing) and attempts to foresee what will be the future of a country, given their present (prediction).
B. Guy Peters affirms this, saying that it is only in comparison that we see the consequences of choices a country (or to be more precise, its leaders) makes. Experimentation in the traditional and scientific sense is not an option because of the fickle nature of politics. Combined with the human factor (that can sometimes be emotionally driven), there is no perfect way to determine the future of a nation, the way the natural sciences do when studying, say, the growth of a virus.
Another political scientist, Timothy C. Lim, says this of the value of comparing: it helps determine what makes two different countries similar as they are different. Although some may see this as flawed, it still helps when trying to find something justifiably identical or different between countries compared. Thus, comparison helps determine the present and future of a state by learning its intricacies and finding common ground both in the past and the existing precedents established by nations. While there is no structured way, this can be determined (unlike in laboratory experiments). The observation and comparison of what are seen and known are what makes comparison a vital piece of global politics.

Turn Your Sound On !!!!
If I understand correctly, these are ceramic bowls floating in a pool of water, possibly in a cave because it’s echo-y, and the clinking sound is them bumping into one another. Like wind chimes, but … water chimes?
yo, i saw this in person over the summer! it’s an art installation!
the piece is called clinamen v.2, created by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot and included as a part of the Soundtracks exhibit in the moma - i saw it in san fran, and this photo is from a showing in new york:

the exhibit is a large shallow pool filled with white ceramic bowls in varying sizes. the bowls are pushed around the pool by a gentle current, and the sound created as they hit each other is somewhere between a wind chime and a haunted bell.
i sat there for a solid ten minutes just watching the bowls move around while listening to the sounds they made. it was absolutely hypnotic…
Soundtracks runs in the san fran moma until january 1st 2018, and i absolutely recommend going if you can. many of the exhibits play with sound in 3D spaces, and there are some truly wild contraptions on display.
i wonder how her moms gonna react seeing those pyrex and corelle floating round a pool
I haven’t seen anything on about this here so

“In 2016 Chinese officials confirmed they had lost control of the space station and it would crash to Earth in 2017 or 2018. China’s space agency has since notified the UN that it expects Tiangong-1 to come down between October 2017 and April 2018.
Since then the station’s orbit has been steadily decaying. In recent weeks it has dipped into more dense reaches of Earth’s atmosphere and started falling faster.”

If you’re wondering where it will crash
The ESA predicted that fragments could fall over any spot within 43ºN and 43ºS, latitudes which encompass major Asian cities such as Beijing, Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore and New Delhi.
The Middle East, the African continent, parts of Europe such as Spain and Italy as well as American cities like San Francisco, New York and Miami are also within the latitude range.
The space agency explained that it is not possible to provide more precise landing locations.
